A few weeks ago author, Alicia Bessette, asked me to work on a trailer for her soon-to-be-released novel, Simply from Scratch. This was my first foray into video. The book comes out on August 5, so I'm excited to check it out.

Española Way Fire Dancer Video

As I was walking back to my hotel on Española Way in South Beach I happened upon the scene of the fire dancer in the video. It was obvious to me that video would do the performance much better justice than stills, so I tried out my 5D Mark II's HD video capabilities — pretty good in low light. Check out the guy at the end who blows fire!

Different Light: Art Deco by Day and Night

Due to my obsession with art deco, I toted my camera up and down
Collins Ave. and Ocean Drive. The art deco hotels of South Beach are quite a different experience at night and during the day, as you'll see below. Here are some of my favorites by night and day.

Saturday at the Penn Relays

The most exciting performance on
Saturday, without a doubt, was Usain
Bolt's anchor leg of the Jamaican 4x100 team in the "USA vs. the World" event. The statisticians clocked Bolt's split at 8.79 seconds for his 100m, which is quite a bit faster than his world record of 9.58 in the 100m dash. As usual, the Jamaican fans were out in force at the relays, but when Bolt came out the crowd went wild. Usually in the USA vs. the world races the crowd chants "U-S-A! U-S-A!" But this year there were so many people chanting for both teams it sounded like the crowd was chanting "U-MAIC-A! U-MAIC-A!"

Well, it's that time of year again, when a hundred thousand or so people flock to Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania for another running of the Penn Relays — the 116th to be exact. Here are a few shots from today, the first big day at the relays.

Simply From Scratch Photos

On April Fool's day I worked with novelist Alicia Bessette. She had spent hours the
night before baking some delectable desserts and will include the recipe for one of them in her forthcoming novel, Simply From Scratch, due out in August of this year. Alicia blogged about the desserts on The Debutante Ball on Wednesday. The recipes are super-secret, so I can't say anything about them, other than that the best part was the sample bag she sent home with me. Needless to say, I am looking forward to reading the book when it comes out. Here are a few pictures of some of the preparations and the final desserts. You won't enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed the desserts. Be sure to look for Simply From Scratch in August.

The Silver Linings Playbook Photos

A few months ago novelist Matthew Quick's The Silver Linings Playbook was chosen as one of the TV Book Club's "Best Reads". Matthew asked me to take photos of places where events in the book took place. The U.K. publisher, Picador, used several those photos and the audio I recorded of Matthew talking about the photos on a website to promote the novel. Click here to check out the photos at the Picador website. The interactive site was designed by SEVEN21. To the right are two photos depicting scenes from the book. Don't forget, Matthew's new novel, Sorta Like a Rockstar, will be out in about a month and a half.

Record Snow in Philly

Sorta Like a Rock Star Cover

Back in December, Matthew Quick, author of
The Silver Linings Playbook, asked me to come
along for the shooting of a trailer for his forthcoming novel, Sorta Like a Rock Star. Emerald Productions shot the trailer and is currently working on the edit. After seeing some of their other work, I'm very excited to see the trailer. Annie Hubbs played the role of "Amber," the book's main character — a high school girl who lives on a school bus with her mother and dog. She was a natural, and according to Matt, a perfect fit for Amber. Yesterday, Little, Brown, & Co. contacted me to license the use of a photo of Annie from that day for the cover of the book. To the right is the cover design, done by Alison Impey. Below are a few of the outtakes from that day. Sorta Like a Rock Star will be released in April 2010.

Eagles Tailgating

Realizing I had lived in the Philadelphia area all my life and had never
experienced the parking lot preceding an Eagles game, I decided to

Philadelphians rang in 2009 with a fireworks display over the Delaware River, Penn's Landing, and the Ben Franklin Bridge.

The buildings of Broad Street were lit up for the
holidays.

Johnson Street Sink Hole

On December 30 a water main broke on the unit block of W. Johnson Street in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. The next morning a PWD truck was backing down the street to get to the site of the water main break when a large section of the street collapsed, engulfing the truck. As snow fell a PWD crew used two cranes and an industrial-powered tow truck to pull the truck out of the sink hole. The photo above ran in the Germantown Courier.
